The Salzburg Museum of Modern Art is divided in two buildings. The Rupertinum is located between the two churches Franziskanerkirche and Kollegienkirche in Salzburg's old town and exhibits contemporary art.
The Museum der Moderne (museum of modern art) was built in 2004 and is worth a visit for its location on Mönchsberg mountain alone. Enjoy modern exhibitions as well as the exclusive restaurant-cafe with views over the city. If the weather is nice you can take a walk on the mountain all the way over to Hohensalzburg Castle on the locals' favourite mountain.
Classic works of art
The Residenzgalerie offers Salzburger Land's portrait collection. Here you will be able to take a close look at works of art by the big European masters from 16th to 19th century.
Salzburg Museum is located in the Neue Residenz' state rooms on Mozartplatz. The modern museum was awarded with the European Museum Prize in 2007 and in 2009. It combines information and entertainment in a wonderful way. Historic gems around Salzburg are exhibited here.
At the Dommuseum in the cathedral you will discover art treasures from Salzburg's 1,300 year old church history. The Festungsmuseum at Hohensalzburg Castle offers interesting insights into the fortress' premises. The highlights amongst the exhibits are armour and instruments of torture.
At the Marionettenmuseum (puppet museum) you can see puppetry art pieces, like Mozart's Magic Flute puppets. At the Museum of Popular Art in Hellbrunn you will get great insights into Salzburg's traditions and customs.
Salzburg's famous daughters and sons
Mozart's birthplace and Mozart's residence in Salzburg are a must for all Mozart fans. Fans of poet Georg Trakl will learn great details about his life and work at his house on Waagplatz.
Various poets, thinkers, musicians and painters lived and worked in Salzburg, especially on the local mountains Mönchsberg and Kapuzinerberg. Stroll through these recreational areas and find the houses of Stefan Zweig, Thomas Bernhard, Gerhard Amanshauser, Peter Handke etc.
At the museum with children
Children love Haus der Natur (house of nature). Nature and technology are presented in a very vivid way. The reptile zoo, the aquarium and the dinosaur room are especially popular with children. The new Science Centre invites you to try various experiments for yourself. The Toy Museum offers a whole adventure world with free gaming zones for children.
